RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts down to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he added. "Including them were a great many UK service members on duty over the festive period. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, highlights how British military are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
