Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a demand for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category during that awards season
- A different innovative game missed out in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for many years.
The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
